A Calling to Care
For Dr. Michelle Ikoma, exceptional dentistry begins with understanding the person behind the smile.
Her path into dentistry began with the influence of a close family friend and trusted family dentist who recognized her natural desire to care for others. With his encouragement, Dr. Ikoma applied to the University of Southern California’s selective ADAPT program, beginning her dental education at an unusually early stage in her academic career. What began as an exploration of a profession devoted to caring for others soon became a lifelong passion.

Getting to Know...

After dental school, Dr. Michelle Ikoma wanted to understand dentistry at a deeper level. Inspired by her program director and mentor, Dr. Terry Donovan, she pursued advanced specialty training in prosthodontics. She was particularly drawn to diagnosis and treatment planning—the intellectual and highly individualized process of bringing together a patient’s health, function, esthetics, lifestyle, priorities, and personal circumstances to determine the most appropriate path forward.

A Passion for Teaching
That passion would later become an important part of her academic career at USC, where Dr. Michelle Ikoma developed the school’s Diagnosis and Treatment Planning curriculum and taught future dentists not only how to diagnose dental conditions, but how to evaluate and care for the patient as a whole. She emphasized communication, patient management, and the importance of tailoring treatment to the individual—principles that remain central to her private practice today.

Treating the Person, Not Just the Smile
After more than 30 years in dentistry, Dr. Michelle Ikoma believes that excellent care is never simply about creating beautiful teeth. It is about taking care of the entire person.
Every patient deserves her undivided attention. She takes the time to listen carefully, understand what matters to them, and explain their condition and treatment options without pressure. When several appropriate options exist, she discusses their advantages and limitations openly—including, when appropriate, the option of no treatment at all. Her goal is to give patients the knowledge and guidance they need to make decisions that are right for them.

The Beauty of Conservative Dentistry
Dr. Michelle Ikoma is equally committed to conservative dentistry. Preserving healthy natural tooth structure is a priority, and when a simpler approach can predictably accomplish the desired result, she often believes that less is more.
Esthetics That Feel Natural
Her philosophy of esthetic dentistry follows the same individualized approach. To Dr. Michelle Ikoma, a beautiful smile does not need to be perfectly symmetrical or exceptionally white. It should look natural and belong unmistakably to the person wearing it. Tooth proportion, shape, color, texture, translucency, gum position, facial features, speech, and the dynamics of a patient’s smile all contribute to an outcome that feels authentic.

Beauty, Function & Longevity
Beauty, however, can never come at the expense of function. Dr. Michelle Ikoma believes successful dentistry must be comfortable, cleansable, functional, maintainable, and designed for longevity. Highly esthetic cases often involve close collaboration with a master ceramist, including individualized shade evaluation and photography, while complex interdisciplinary cases are carefully coordinated with trusted specialists to provide continuity of care.

A Lifelong Commitment to Excellence
Even after decades of clinical practice and teaching, Dr. Michelle Ikoma remains energized by learning. She still finds tremendous satisfaction in the problem-solving involved in diagnosis and treatment planning, particularly because no two patients are ever exactly alike.
Â
Ultimately, she defines success not simply by how dentistry looks when treatment is completed, but by how well it allows a patient to function, how comfortably it can be maintained, how well it endures, and how naturally it enhances the patient's confidence.
A Doctor, Educator & Advocate

Patients often tell Dr. Michelle Ikoma that they appreciate her gentleness, patience, and willingness to explain the reasoning behind their care. She views herself not only as their doctor, but also as an educator, advisor, advocate, and partner.
A Legacy of Caring
Twenty years from now, Dr. Michelle Ikoma hopes her patients remember something even simpler:Â how much she cared, and how hard she worked to take the very best care of them.
